It Depends...

If you catch me on the street and ask me a financial question, there's a pretty good chance you're going to get one answer...it depends.

You could accuse me of being cagey. After all, this is how I make my living, and I can't just go around giving away all my advice for free. And maybe there's a little truth to that. But the much bigger truth is this: Prescription without diagnosis is malpractice.

Personal finance is just that...personal. Without understanding your circumstances, your goals, your family, and what you're ultimately trying to accomplish, it's nearly impossible to make a recommendation with any real confidence. What might be a fantastic decision for one person could be a terrible one for another.

Those who work with me know I spend a great deal of time getting to know the full picture before making recommendations. Because good financial planning isn't about having the same answer for everyone. It's about finding the right answer for you.

The Retirement Plan Problem Most Couples Don't See Coming

Retirement planning can feel like a giant algebra problem, pulling this string and changing that variable here and there until you've run through all the possible scenarios. This can be confusing for some or exciting for others. One thing many working-age couples haven't thought of is that a large age gap in spouses (5+ years) can complicate all this "algebra" in retirement planning even more. This article steps through many things to consider if your spousal age gap is large. And they can be great reminders of retirement plan options to think through even for spouses with similar ages, or for single people as well.

Why You Should Give More Money to the IRS Right Now ...Maybe

Everyone dreams of giving as much money to the IRS as possible, right?! No? Well, sometimes voluntarily giving more right now via a Roth Conversion can save you much, much more down the road. But it's not quite as straightforward as you might think.

Things in the blog:
→ Why you might want to do a Roth Conversion to pay more in taxes right now (and the payoffs you get later)
→ How RMDs can create tax burden (and how Roth conversions can help)
→ The best time to pay taxes (it's not never...unfortunately)
→ How to get an IRS Conference Room named after you (with poor Roth Conversion planning)

What I've been up to lately

Between kids' sports and activities, we've been running all over the place lately. Liz stopped by the office with Clare the other day between dropping kids off, and needless to say, Clare made herself right at home. Apparently, my office chair is more comfortable than it looks! Here's hoping I'm a little more exciting to clients when they stop by for their upcoming fall planning meetings.

August The Retire to Abundance Newsletter Intentionally Intentional: The article and my blog this month may seem a little at odds, but I think they really come back to the same thing: be intentional. There’s nothing wrong with being busy in retirement, and there’s nothing wrong with slowing down. The key is that you’re choosing it. We spend a lot of time planning how much money we can spend in retirement. I think we should spend just as much time planning how we want to spend our time. Your...

July The Retire to Abundance Newsletter What are you really saving for? July truly is one of my favorite months. The pace of life slows down just enough that we can step away from the office, escape the everyday routine, and spend meaningful time together as a family. Every year, those trips leave me feeling refreshed, grateful, and emotionally full in a way that's hard to replicate any other time of year. As I was reflecting on that this year, I realized it's exactly what I hope good...
