Tip your Server, Not the IRS:

Death and taxes. The undefeated champions of life.

I’d like to think my firm's consistency and follow-through are pretty dependable too, but I have to admit the IRS has a longer track record.

Taxes are complex, constantly changing, and often far more flexible than most people realize. With thoughtful, proactive planning, the difference over a lifetime can be significant. My philosophy is simple: pay what you owe, follow the rules, and take advantage of every strategy available to you.

Tip your server generously. The IRS does not need a bonus for their sub-standard service.

New Tax Break for Seniors

A new tax bill recently changed the way that Social Security income is taxed by adding an additional deduction for those 65 and older. Some media outlets have been touting this as "no tax on Social Security," but, of course, it's not quite that simple. This short article from the Center for Retirement Research details the new deduction. I know first-hand that taxes don't go away once you retire, and in some ways they maybe even get more complicated. Reducing tax burden is one of the biggest ways I save my clients money, so if you have questions about reducing yours, reach out. You can simply hit reply to this email.

The Simplest Way to Avoid Taxes

Breaking News! I’ve actually discovered the two best ways to avoid taxes entirely!

First option: make no money. None. Zero. Retire to a cabin, grow your own food, and transact exclusively in bartered zucchini. The IRS tends to lose interest when there’s nothing to report.

Second option: just don’t pay them and see what happens. I do not recommend this route, but technically it does avoid taxes… at least briefly. Orange jumpsuits are not a great retirement wardrobe, though.

Alright, neither of those are great life choices, but there are several great things in this blog:

→ Why you don't need to pay attention to the other 97 million tax factors
→ How intentional, forward-looking tax planning can save you thousands (or even more)
→ Why a complex tax code shouldn't mean a complex tax strategy

January The Retire to Abundance Newsletter Scamuary: If you’ve ever deleted an email promising a surprise inheritance or ignored a call about a frozen account you don’t have, congratulations, you’ve already met a scammer. Unfortunately, the scammers are getting better and have recently hit a little closer to home than we’d like. One of the advantages of working closely with clients is that nothing happens in isolation. When there’s a trusted relationship and clear processes in place, it’s...

December The Retire to Abundance Newsletter How to Retire to Abundance: When I talk about retiring to abundance, I am not talking about retiring with the biggest number on a statement or the most optimized social security claiming strategy (although they certainly don't hurt ☺️). I am talking about retiring with enough clarity and confidence to actually use the resources you worked decades to build. Most people I work with have done the saving part well. The harder part is learning how to...

November The Retire to Abundance Newsletter How to Treat Yourself: Every year about this time, I notice a familiar pattern. November shows up, the calendar fills itself, and suddenly the things we meant to get done “sometime this fall” are quietly sitting in the corner hoping we forgot about them. If you’re anything like me, you probably have a running list of “I’ll get to that later” items that somehow survived all the way to Thanksgiving. This has me thinking of one of Jordan Peterson’s 12...
